Sara Sheikh was always deeply drawn to traditions of her ancestral roots in Pakistan. As a child her parents took her on family visits to Pakistan and India, later Sara traveled on her own to Nepal and Pakistan. Through her travels and culture, she learned there was more to life than materialism. And her sense of the world – and sense of style was greatly influenced by growing up in her family-owned Indian Boutique store.
Sara graduated from Goddard College with a degree in Sustainable Agriculture in 1995.. She then began a Community Supported Agriculture farm in upstate New York. It was also during this time that the former child-gymnast was introduced to the transformational practice of yoga, which she began practicing while she was pregnant. Her son Massoud is now 12 years old.
Sara’s first teachers were Iyengar-Certified Kelly Morris and Francios Raoult. She later developed a one-on-one mentorship with Beth Stott and soon began substitute teaching yoga classes. She also trained in Mindfulness Meditation with Thich Naht Hahn and the monks and nuns of Green Dharma Center.
After 12 years of practice and integration, Sara decided to attend the RYT International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Canada, in 2008 where she received her teacher certificate in Yoga. Sara was drawn to the Sivinianda practice after being introduced to Swami Sivananda’s books and teaching in the late 1990’s. Sara brings to class her years of experiences.. Students learn a deeper awareness of their breath as it is a thread sewn throughout the class. Through proper alignment and gentle guiding of energy into the posture, Sara helps students increase flexibility, strength, endurance, focus and relaxation in a posture. Students learn to have a chakra focal point along with introduction to mantra repetition. Sara is always willing to give personalized instruction, introduce yogic philosophy, and help students achieve their personal goals. Sara also teaches yoga to youth through Baltimore Yoga for Youth Project. She expands her mind working part time at breathe books. |
