Anjali Sunita, Founder and Director of Baltimore Yoga Village, began yoga through the study of philosophy as a moody teenager. Because she was always questioning and examining the purpose of life and death, her favorite theater teacher gave her philosophy to read like Emerson, Thoreau, and Buddhism which later grew into a practice of meditation. She furthered her practice of meditation through the study of North Indian Classical Music at Oberlin College with Hasu Patel, who taught her to concentrate on the chakras and breath while singing Divine Names. It was at this time that she began giving herself the gift of yoga classes and home practice. As a woman of half Indian descent, Anjali traveled many times to India to visit family and in the meantime traditional ashrams where she could further her inquiries and practice of yoga, philosphy, and meditation. In January 2005, she became certified to teach yoga through the Sivananda Dhanwantari Ashram in South India, a well-rounded system of yoga that emphasizes proper breathing, relaxation, exercise, diet, meditation/ positive thinking. In 2006, she began Baltimore Yoga for Youth, a project bringing the benefits of yoga to Baltimore’s inner city schools. In 2007, she began Baltimore Yoga Village, in the location formerly known as Ahimsa Yoga Center. The dream of the Yoga Village is to serve Baltimore by creating peaceful and loving community centers, which facilitate the practice of authentic yoga for people in all life conditions. Now with two locations, she hopes to bring together a diverse community in Baltimore, inclusiveof all branches of yoga as paths to peace, health, and meditation.
