Traditional Understanding of Meditation
Meditation follows the practice of concentration, fixing the mind on a concrete object or abstract idea. Meditation is an uninterupted flow of concentration upon an object or idea. There are many kinds of meditation, meditations on the heart, on a deity, on a sound or name - it is best to begin the practice of meditation by directing the mind to something that one likes or takes pleasure in. It is easiest to meditate upon such an object or idea. When one reaches a meditative state, one has concentrated for a period of time upon an object such that the person feels no separation from that object or idea and in fact feels an embodied state of union with that object or idea. The underlying experience of such a state of union is sat-chid-ananda, truth-knowledge-bliss. The main reason to practice yoga asanas is to be able to sit with less pains for meditation. Pranayama (breathing techniques) are also a preparation for meditation.
